Self Esteem

BEHIND THE BROOCH
Hannah Humpston, with over two decades of experience, crafted a bespoke silver brooch for British musician Rebecca Lucy Taylor, known as Self Esteem.
The brooch debuted at the Mercury Prize 2022 and then became a significant symbol throughout Taylor’s “Prioritise Pleasure” tour.
The commission came from Self Esteem’s team, recognising Hannah’s ability to create bold, meaningful jewellery. Self Esteem had previously worn a 97% logo on a tie, and her stylist, Luke Day, contacted Hannah to design a brooch for her blazer lapel, especially for her Mercury Prize performance. “I love working creatively with others. The journey of combining ideas and expertise is always exciting,” Hannah shares. “It was a pleasure to work with Rebecca’s team. I love her music, passion, and everything she stands for.”
Hannah created the piece from her studio in West Cornwall. The brooch had to be visible on stage and camera, secure, and balanced for performance. “Every piece I create is crafted with care and precision. It’s about making something that lasts, something with a story,” Hannah says.
The 97% brooch is a powerful statement. By wearing it, Self Esteem used her platform to raise awareness about the shocking statistic that 97% of UK women aged 18-24 have experienced sexual harassment or assault. The brooch turned heads at the Mercury Prize and gained significant attention, sparking conversations and resonating deeply with many.
The creation of this iconic brooch showcases Hannah Humpston’s exceptional skill and dedication to meaningful design. “It was truly an honour to help design and make such a poignant piece,” Hannah reflects. The story behind the brooch is a powerful reminder of how jewellery can be both beautiful and impactful, carrying messages that resonate and inspire.
